Baxter Announces End-of-Life for Mini-Infuser 150XL & 300XL

Baxter has recently issued an End-of-Life announcement for its Mini-Infuser Systems 150XL and 300XL infusion pumps. Though the company has already discontinued the production of these models, Baxter will still offer repair services and parts until December 31, 2012. Baxter reminds consumers that replacement parts are still subject for availability and accessories will be offered while supplies last.

Baxter Finalizes Sigma International Acquisition

Baxter International, a leading global medical device manufacturer, has bought the remaining 60 percent of shares from SIGMA International General Medical Apparatus, LLC. The acquisition reportedly cost Baxter approximately $90 million. Three years ago, Baxter sealed an agreement to hold just 40 percent of equity stake in SIGMA while exclusively distributing the company’s infusion pumps globally.

Ultra-portable Fetal Heart Rate Monitor Wins Grand Prize

Earlier this week, the first National Conference on Value-driven Engineering (Vd-E) held in Akron, Ohio, awarded a grand prize to a team of students from Johns Hopkins University. Students from the Center of Bioengineering Innovation and Design won the conference grand prize for their case study in which they created an ultra-portable fetal heart rate monitor. The conference was held last April 22-24 at the John S. Knight Center. Participants comprised researchers, biomedical professionals and medical device experts.

Carefusion and Cerner Develop Infusion Technology

Earlier this week, health care technology providers Carefusion and Cerner, announced a joint project to integrate smart infusion technology in the Oklahoma Heart Hospital. With the aim to improve medication safety, quality patient care and efficient workflow, the integrated solution allows nurses to remotely administer medication programs from the Cerner Millenium electronic health record (EHR) system to the Carefusion Alaris Infusion Pump System. This process is done by barcode scanning.
